Asteroid Bennu Holds the Building Blocks of Life

Explanation: What can a space rock tell us about life on Earth? NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft made a careful approach to the near-Earth asteroid 101955 Bennu in October of 2020 to collect surface samples. In September 2023, the robotic spaceship returned these samples to Earth. A recent analysis has shown, surprisingly, that the samples contained 14 out of the 20 known amino acids that are the essential building blocks of life. The presence of the amino acids re-introduces a big question: Could life have originated in space? However, the protein building blocks themselves held another surprise -- they contained an even mixture of left-handed and right-handed amino acids -- in contrast to our Earth which only has left-handed ones. This raises another big question: Why does life on Earth have only left-handed amino acids? Research on this is sure to continue.

Explanation: Will the spider ever catch the fly? Not if both are large emission nebulas toward the constellation of the Charioteer (Auriga). The spider-shaped gas cloud in the image center is actually an emission nebula labelled IC 417, while the smaller fly-shaped cloud on the left is dubbed NGC 1931 and is both an emission nebula and a reflection nebula. About 10,000 light-years distant, both nebulas harbor young star clusters. For scale, the more compact NGC 1931 (Fly) is about 10 light-years across. The featured deep image, captured over 20 hours during late January in Berkshire UK, also shows more diffuse and red-glowing interstellar gas and dust.

Le tombeau est abrité sous quatre chapelles, sortes d'immenses coffres sans plancher. Sur les faces externes des murs latéraux de la troisième chapelle, figurent les représentations des dieux protecteurs, ici, le dieu Thot à la tête d'ibis, surnommé le dieu du temps. Dans la mythologie égyptienne, il est celui qui capte la lumière de la nuit et régit les cycles lunaires. Lorsqu'il est représenté sous forme d'un babouin, il porte alors sur la tête le croissant lunaire. On lui attribue de nombreuses fonctions : dieu de la connaissance, il est l'incarnation de l'intelligence et du savoir, de la parole et de l'écriture. Déchiffrant les formules magiques, il exerce aussi la charge de vizir, de secrétaire messager et de greffier auprès des divinités. Il assiste Anubis lors la présentation du défunt devant le tribunal des âmes.

Explanation: Is this the largest hummingbird ever? Although it may look like a popular fluttering nectarivore, what is pictured is actually a beautifully detailed and colorful aurora, complete with rays reminiscent of feathers. This aurora was so bright that it was visible to the unaided eye during blue hour -- just after sunset when the sky appears a darkening blue. However, the aurora only looked like a hummingbird through a sensitive camera able to pick up faint glows. As reds typically occurring higher in the Earth's atmosphere than the greens, the real 3D shape of this aurora would likely appear unfamiliar. Auroras are created when an explosion on the Sun causes high energy particles to flow into the Earth's atmosphere and excite atoms and molecules of nitrogen and oxygen. The featured image was captured about two weeks ago above Lyngseidt, Norway.

En bois, recouvert de feuilles d'or de trois millimètres et incrusté de pierres précieuses, de pâtes de verre et de faïence, le trône est soutenu par des pieds en forme de pattes de lion se prolongeant par une tête de félin. Chacun des deux accoudoirs est formé par une aile déployée de faucon terminée par une tête de cobra, l'un portant la couronne de Haute-Égypte, et l'autre, celle de Basse-Égypte. Des feuilles d'argent ont été appliquées sur les habits des souverains. Les deux personnages ne portent qu'une sandale chacun ; un surprenant détail, sujet à des multiples interprétations. Au-dessus du couple royal, le disque solaire, attribué au dieu Aton, propage ses rayons terminés par de petites mains.

Le dossier du siège montre une scène intimiste de la vie quotidienne du jeune roi et de son épouse. Ankhésenamon porte une coiffe à plumes et couvre d'onguent le bras de son époux coiffé de la perruque nubienne. Le décor est propre à l'esthétique du style amarnien, caractérisé par la présence de fleurs, d'animaux, d'oiseaux et des personnages à la bouche charnue et des formes allongées. Cette scène centrale fait clairement référence au culte monothéiste du dieu Aton (rayons du soleil), que le père, Akhenaton, avait instauré. C'est donc ici le siège de l'enfant-roi. Cependant, en accédant au trône, Toutânkhamon, initialement baptisé Toutankh-aton, restaure le polythéisme du culte d'Amon. Il semblerait qu'il ne manquait aucune occasion d'honorer les divinités ; sur la porte de sa tombe, les écritures ont révélé que le roi « a passé sa vie à façonner des images des dieux ».

SANTé/MEDECINE - Le cerveau - Synapse d'un neurone pyramidal

La synapse correspond à la zone de connexion entre deux neurones. La communication va toujours dans le même sens : de l'élément présynaptique vers l'élément postsynaptique. En rouge est figuré un marqueur présynaptique tandis que le bleu révèle un marqueur postsynaptique de ce neurone pyramidal.

Milky Way over the Australian Pinnacles

Explanation: What strange world is this? Earth. In the foreground of the featured image are the Pinnacles, unusual rock spires in Nambung National Park in Western Australia. Made of ancient sea shells (limestone), how these human-sized picturesque spires formed remains unknown. In the background, just past the end of the central Pinnacle, is a bright crescent Moon. The eerie glow around the Moon is mostly zodiacal light, sunlight reflected by dust grains orbiting between the planets in the Solar System. Arching across the top is the central band of our Milky Way Galaxy. Many famous stars and nebulas are also visible in the background night sky. The featured 29-panel panorama was taken and composed in 2015 September after detailed planning that involved the Moon, the rock spires, and their corresponding shadows. Even so, the strong zodiacal light was a pleasant surprise.

La tractographie offre la possibilité d'étudier in vivo la substance blanche du cerveau, celle constituée d'axones myélinisés qui relient les régions de matière grise. Cette gaine de myéline, qui entoure les terminaisons nerveuses, permet à l'information d'être propagée plus rapidement. Sur cette image, les faisceaux pyramidaux apparaissent en bleu et les fibres transverses pontocérebelleuses sont colorées en rouge et vert.
