SANTé/MEDECINE - ADN - Les chromosomes du génome humain


L'ADN cellulaire condensé en chromosomes prend la forme d'un X, où la partie centrale charnière est appelée centromère. Les chromosomes vont par paire, l'un provenant du père, l'autre de la mère. Le génome humain en compte 23 paires, soit 46 chromosomes au total.

NGC 1360: The Robin's Egg Nebula

Explanation: This pretty nebula lies some 1,500 light-years away, its shape and color in this telescopic view reminiscent of a robin's egg. The cosmic cloud spans about 3 light-years, nestled securely within the boundaries of the southern constellation of the Furnace (Fornax). Recognized as a planetary nebula, egg-shaped NGC 1360 doesn't represent a beginning, though. Instead, it corresponds to a brief and final phase in the evolution of an aging starIn fact, visible at the center of the nebula, the central star of NGC 1360 is known to be a binary star system likely consisting of two evolved white dwarf stars, less massive but much hotter than the Sun. Their intense and otherwise invisible ultraviolet radiation has stripped away electrons from the atoms in their mutually surrounding gaseous shroud. The blue-green hue inside of NGC 1360 seen here is the strong emission produced as electrons recombine with doubly ionized oxygen atoms.

Gaia Reconstructs a Top View of our Galaxy

Explanation: What does our Milky Way Galaxy look like from the top? Because we are on the inside, humanity can’t get an actual picture. Recently, however, just such a map has been made using location data for over a billion stars from ESA’s Gaia mission. The resulting featured illustration shows that just like many other spiral galaxies, our Milky Way has distinct spiral arms. Our Sun and most of the bright stars we see at night are in just one arm: Orion. Gaia data bolsters previous indications that our Milky Way has more than two spiral arms. Our Galaxy's center sports a prominent bar. The colors of our Galaxy's thin disk derive mostly from dark dustbright blue stars, and red emission nebula. Although data analysis is ongoing, Gaia was deactivated in March after a succession mission.

ASTRONOMIE - Pleine lune des Fleurs ce lundi : tout savoir sur ce phénomène


Pleine et ronde, la lune sera plus illuminée et visible qu’à l’accoutumée ce lundi 12 mai 2025 dont son apogée se produira autour de 18h55 dans le ciel de votre département. 

Que se cache derrière le surnom de cette pleine lune ?

Si vous scrutez le ciel ce lundi soir, vous y verrez une pleine lune. Il s’agit d’un phénomène durant laquelle la face visible de la Lune, depuis la Terre, apparait entièrement illuminée par le Soleil.

A quelle heure aura lieu la pleine Lune ?

Au global, et quand la météo le permet, on peut observer une peine Lune tous les 29 jours. Et toutes ne se ressemblent pas. En ce mois de mai, la pleine Lune tombe à 18 h 55, heure de Paris. C'est l'heure à laquelle la pleine lune sera à son apogée. Il fera donc jour au moment de l’observer.

Elle n’en sera pas moins magnifique plus tard dans la nuit. Attention toutefois aux conditions météorologiques qui peuvent obstruer la bonne vision de ce phénomène astronomique.

Pourquoi pleine Lune des Fleurs ?

Ce rendez-vous céleste, bien connu des amateurs d’astronomie, attire aussi les curieux séduits par ses surnoms évocateurs et les mythes qu’elle fait fleurir, au propre comme au figuré. Celle du mois de mai est nommée pleine Lune des Fleurs, en référence à l’explosion florale de cette période printanière. Chaque pleine Lune de l’année possède un nom hérité de traditions amérindiennes.

Toutes les pleines lunes de l’année possèdent un sobriquet ayant un lien avec sa saison. Si vous lisez cet article après le 12 mai, la prochaine pleine Lune aura lieu le 11 juin prochain, ce sera la pleine Lune aux Fraises.

Although hypothesized before, perhaps more surprising is that the disk appears curved at the outer edges. Although data analysis is ongoing, Gaia was deactivated in March after a successful mission.

Explanation: If you could stand on Venus -- what would you see? Pictured is the view from Venera 14, a robotic Soviet lander which parachuted and air-braked down through the thick Venusian atmosphere in March of 1982. The desolate landscape it saw included flat rocks, vast empty terrain, and a featureless sky above Phoebe Regio near Venus' equator. On the lower left is the spacecraft's penetrometer used to make scientific measurements, while the light piece on the right is part of an ejected lens-cap. Enduring temperatures near 450 degrees Celsius and pressures 75 times that on Earth, the hardened Venera spacecraft lasted only about an hour. Although data from Venera 14 was beamed across the inner Solar System over 40 years ago, digital processing and merging of Venera's unusual images continues even today. Recent analyses of infrared measurements taken by ESA's orbiting Venus Express spacecraft indicate that active volcanoes may currently exist on Venus.

Explanation: This picture from July 1997 shows a ramp from the Pathfinder lander, the Sojourner robot rover, deflated landing airbags, a couch, Barnacle Bill and Yogi Rock appear together in this 3D stereo view of the surface of Mars. Barnacle Bill is the rock just left of the house cat-sized, solar-paneled Sojourner. Yogi is the big friendly-looking boulder at top right. The "couch" is the angular rock shape visible near center on the horizon. Look at the image with red/blue glasses (or just hold a piece of clear red plastic over your left eye and blue or green over your right) to get the dramatic 3D perspective. The stereo view was recorded by the remarkable Imager for Mars Pathfinder (IMP) camera. The IMP had two optical paths for stereo imaging and ranging and was equipped with an array of color filters for spectral analysis. Operating as the first astronomical observatory on Mars, the IMP also recorded images of the Sun and Deimos, the smallest of Mars' two tiny moons.

IXPE Explores a Black Hole Jet

Explanation: How do black holes create X-rays? Answering this long-standing question was significantly advanced recently with data taken by NASA’s IXPE satellite. X-rays cannot exit a black hole, but they can be created in the energetic environment nearby, in particular by a jet of particles moving outward. By observing X-ray light arriving from near the supermassive black hole at the center of galaxy BL Lac, called a blazar, it was discovered that these X-rays lacked significant polarization, which is expected when created more by energetic electrons than protons. In the featured artistic illustration, a powerful jet is depicted emanating from an orange-colored accretion disk circling the black hole. Understanding highly energetic processes across the universe helps humanity to understand similar processes that occur on or near our Earth.

ASTRONOMY - M1: The Incredible Expanding Crab

M1: The Incredible Expanding Crab

Explanation: Cataloged as M1, the Crab Nebula is the first on Charles Messier's famous list of things which are not comets. In fact, the Crab Nebula is now known to be a supernova remnant, an expanding cloud of debris from the death explosion of a massive star. The violent birth of the Crab was witnessed by astronomers in the year 1054. Roughly 10 light-years across, the nebula is still expanding at a rate of about 1,500 kilometers per second. You can see the expansion by comparing these sharp images from the Hubble Space Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope. The Crab's dynamic, fragmented filaments were captured in visible light by Hubble in 2005 and Webb in infrared light in 2023. This cosmic crustacean lies about 6,500 light-years away in the constellation Taurus.
