Willem Einthoven inventa le galvanomètre à cordes au début du XXe siècle. Il obtint le prix Nobel de physiologie ou médecine en 1924 pour ses travaux sur l'électrocardiographie, qu'il rend plus simple et pratique avec le galvanomètre à cordes.
