STEVE: A Glowing River over France

Explanation: Sometimes a river of hot gas flows over your head. In this case the river created a Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement (STEVE) that glowed bright red, white, and pink. Details of how STEVEs work remain a topic of research, but recent evidence holds that their glow results from a fast-moving river of hot ions flowing over a hundred kilometers up in the Earth's atmosphere: the ionosphere. The more expansive dull red glow might be related to the flowing STEVE, but alternatively might be a Stable Auroral Red (SAR) arc, a more general heat-related glow. The featured picture, taken earlier this month in Côte d'Opale, France, is a wide-angle digital composite made as the STEVE arc formed nearly overhead. Although the apparition lasted only a few minutes, this was long enough for the quick-thinking astrophotographer to get in the picture -- can you find him?

Explanation: What is the most spook-tacular nebula in the galaxy? One contender is LDN 43, which bears an astonishing resemblance to a vast cosmic bat flying amongst the stars on a dark Halloween night. Located about 1400 light years away in the constellation Ophiuchus, this molecular cloud is dense enough to block light not only from background stars, but from wisps of gas lit up by the nearby reflection nebula LBN 7. Far from being a harbinger of death, this 12-light year-long filament of gas and dust is actually a stellar nursery. Glowing with eerie light, the bat is lit up from inside by dense gaseous knots that have just formed young stars.

Explanation: These brightly outlined flowing shapes look ghostly on a cosmic scale. A telescopic view toward the constellation Cassiopeia, the colorful skyscape features the swept-back, comet-shaped clouds IC 59 (left) and IC 63. About 600 light-years distant, the clouds aren't actually ghosts. They are slowly disappearing though, under the influence of energetic radiation from hot, luminous star gamma Cas. Gamma Cas is physically located only 3 to 4 light-years from the nebulae and lies just above the right edge of the frame. Slightly closer to gamma Cas, IC 63 is dominated by red H-alpha light emitted as hydrogen atoms ionized by the hot star's ultraviolet radiation recombine with electrons. Farther from the star, IC 59 shows less H-alpha emission but more of the characteristic blue tint of dust reflected star light. The field of view spans over 1 degree or 10 light-years at the estimated distance of the interstellar apparitions.

CATASTROPHES NATURELLES - Un Mégatsunami de 500 mètres frappe l’Alaska

Vous imaginez une vague plus haute que presque tous les gratte-ciel de New York ? C’est difficile à croire, et pourtant, c’est bien ce qui s’est passé dans un fjord isolé en Alaska. Le 10 août dernier, un pan entier de montagne a tout simplement glissé dans l’eau, provoquant une vague monstrueuse, un véritable mur d’eau. C’est le genre de chose qu’on voit dans les films catastrophes.

Heureusement, et c’est presque un miracle, personne n’a été blessé. Mais l’événement nous rappelle à quel point la nature peut être imprévisible et, disons-le, terrifiante.

Tout a commencé très tôt, vers 5h30 du matin, dans un endroit appelé Tracy Arm, à environ 130 kilomètres de la capitale de l’Alaska, Juneau. Ce n’est pas une petite poignée de cailloux qui est tombée. Non, on parle de 100 millions de mètres cubes de terre et de roche. Pour vous donner une idée, c’est un volume absolument colossal qui s’est effondré d’un seul coup.

La conséquence directe de ce plongeon ? Un mégatsunami. La première vague qui a déferlé sur le versant opposé du fjord a atteint une hauteur estimée entre 470 et 500 mètres. C’est simple, c’est plus haut que tous les gratte-ciel de New York, à l’exception du One World Trade Center. Une véritable montagne d’eau.

L’histoire aurait pu être tragique. Des kayakistes qui campaient sur une île à l’entrée du fjord ont vu tout leur matériel emporté par les flots. Par chance, ils s’en sont sortis sains et saufs. Une chance incroyable, quand on y pense.

POLYCHROMIE - La couleur et ses mystères

De nombreux produits et matériaux se sont développés en jouant avec les effets de la couleur, s'accompagnant d'une activité de recherche importante. Il faut dire que la perception colorée, à travers le processus psychophysique qui est mis en œuvre, est l'objet de nombreuses interrogations.

Toutes les couleurs ont leur part de mystère. La pourpre, le kermès et le pastel sont notamment trois teintes mythiques entre toutes, profondément inscrites dans le patrimoine culturel des civilisations méditerranéennes.

On dit ainsi des empereurs byzantins qu'ils sont « nés dans la pourpre », on parle du rouge écarlate du manteau du Christ ou du fabuleux « pays de cocagne », où l'or bleu du pastel en coques assure indéfiniment la prospérité générale... Voilà pourquoi ces trois couleurs ont été choisies comme exemples pour illustrer les acquis de recherches pluridisciplinaires récentes sur l'histoire et l'archéologie de la production des colorants.

Depuis l'exposition internationale du Musée des beaux-arts de Carcassonne (1999-2000) et celle du Centre de documentació i Museu tèxtil de Terrassa, près de Barcelone (2000), portant sur l'importance culturelle et économique des colorants extraits du monde vivant, la thématique de la couleur a connu un nouveau souffle.

C'est la lecture d'un dossier du CNRS (CNRS Info 391) à propos de cette exposition et celle de l'ouvrage désormais incontournable intitulé Traité de la couleur (publication des Presses polytechniques et universitaires romandes, 2001), qui m'a incitée à vous proposer ce dossier sur les couleurs...

Porphyrion: The Longest Known Black Hole Jets

Explanation: How far can black hole jets extend? A new record was found just recently with the discovery of a 23-million light-year long jet pair from a black hole active billions of years ago. Dubbed Porphyrion for a mythological Greek giant, the impressive jets were created by a type of black hole that does not usually create long jets -- one that is busy creating radiation from infalling gas. The featured animated video depicts what it might look like to circle around this powerful black hole system. Porphyrion is shown as a fast stream of energetic particles, and the bright areas are where these particles are impacting surrounding gas. The discovery was made using data from the Keck and Mayall (DESI) optical observatories as well as LOFAR and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. The existence of these jets demonstrates that black holes can affect not only their home galaxies but far out into the surrounding universe.

Explanation: These dark pillars may look destructive, but they are creating stars. This pillar-capturing picture of the Eagle Nebula combines visible light exposures taken with the Hubble Space Telescope with infrared images taken with the James Webb Space Telescope to highlight evaporating gaseous globules (EGGs) emerging from pillars of molecular hydrogen gas and dust. The giant pillars are light years in length and are so dense that interior gas contracts gravitationally to form stars. At each pillar's end, the intense radiation of bright young stars causes low density material to boil away, leaving stellar nurseries of dense EGGs exposed. The Eagle Nebula, associated with the open star cluster M16, lies about 7000 light years away.

ASTRONOMIE - Collisions avec la Terre - Meteor Crater (États-Unis)

Situé près de Flagstaff, en Arizona, Meteor Crater, également connu sous le nom de Barringer Crater, est un grand cratère d'impact météoritique. Ce phénomène naturel remarquable est l'un des cratères de ce type les mieux préservés de notre planète. Il mesure environ 1 200 m de diamètre et 170 m de profondeur.

ASTRONOMIE - Bénou - Équivalent à 22 bombes atomiques

Des chercheurs ont déterminé la date précise à laquelle un astéroïde pourrait potentiellement percuter la Terre, criant dans cette collision une puissance équivalente à celle de 22 bombes atomiques. Cet objet céleste, baptisé Bénou, s'approche de notre planète tous les six ans. Cependant, les scientifiques estiment que le 24 septembre 2182 pourrait être la date à laquelle le risque de collision entre la Terre et l'astéroïde pourrait être réel.

Bien que la date potentielle de l'événement apocalyptique soit encore lointaine, la NASA déploie actuellement d'intenses efforts pour dévier l'astéroïde Bénou et se trouve dans la phase finale de sa mission. Il y a sept ans, l'agence spatiale américaine a lancé une sonde vers l'astéroïde dans le but de collecter des échantillons, dans l'espoir que les informations recueillies puissent aider à prévenir une éventuelle rencontre catastrophique.

Explanation: Sometimes the night sky is full of surprises. Take the sky over Lindis Pass, South Island, New Zealand one-night last week. Instead of a typically calm night sky filled with constant stars, a busy and dynamic night sky appeared. Suddenly visible were pervasive red aurora, green picket-fence aurora, a red SAR arc, a STEVE, a meteor, and the Moon. These outshone the center of our Milky Way Galaxy and both of its two satellite galaxies: the LMC and SMC. All of these were captured together on 28 exposures in five minutes, from which this panorama was composed. Auroras lit up many skies last week, as a Coronal Mass Ejection from the Sun unleashed a burst of particles toward our Earth that created colorful skies over latitudes usually too far from the Earth's poles to see them. More generally, night skies this month have other surprises, showing not only auroras -- but comets.

Il atteint un poids de 2,7 à 4,1 kilos et une longueur vertex-coccyx d'environ 36 centimètres.

Bébé est très occupé à sucer, à respirer, à cligner des yeux... Il tourne la tête, et « attrape des choses » comme son autre main. Et puis il étire ses jambes. Problème, il n'a plus assez de place pour sa petite gymnastique quotidienne. D'où les coups de pied vigoureux que vous ressentez. Une manière d'exprimer son envie de sortir ?

LES BELLES INVENTIONS DE LEONARD DE VINCI - Le char d'assaut

Très connu, le char d'assaut de Léonard de Vinci n'est cependant pas une totale nouveauté ; le concept était latent dès les tours mobiles de combat de l'époque romaine. Ce char se déplace grâce aux huit hommes qui sont à l'intérieur. Léonard pensait que des chevaux ne supporteraient pas d'être enfermés dans ce « tank ».

Sa forme conique est destinée à dévier les projectiles, boulets de canon ou blocs de roche lancés par une catapulte. On pense qu'il était renforcé par des plaques métalliques, selon la conception qu'en avait Léonard. Comme pour l'immense majorité de ses inventions, il n'a jamais été réalisé de son vivant.

Le futur bébé prend du poids. Les proportions tête-corps sont plus harmonieuses. Il ouvre les yeux. Sa peau est rouge et plissée. Il a des ongles de pieds et de mains. Ses dents de lait commencent à se recouvrir d'émail. Les cellules sanguines sont sécrétées uniquement par la moelle osseuse. C'est aussi le début de la myélinisation de la moelle épinière. Si votre fœtus est masculin, ses testicules gagnent le scrotum au septième mois.

Bébé reconnaît votre voix et réagit aux sons.

La taille vertex-coccyx atteint environ 28 centimètres à la fin du septième mois, pour un poids de 1,7 kg.

Explanation: Did you see last night's aurora? This question was relevant around much of the world a few days ago because a powerful auroral storm became visible unusually far from the Earth's poles. The cause was a giant X-class solar flare on Tuesday that launched energetic electrons and protons into the Solar System, connecting to the Earth via our planet's magnetic field. A red glow of these particles striking oxygen atoms high in Earth's atmosphere pervades the frame, while vertical streaks dance. The featured video shows a one-hour timelapse as seen from Cortina d'Ampezzo over Alps Mountain peaks in northern Italy. Stars from our Milky Way Galaxy dot the background while streaks from airplanes and satellites punctuate the foreground. The high recent activity of our Sun is likely to continue to produce picturesque auroras over Earth during the next year or so.

Un fin duvet, le lanugo, recouvre la peau et le corps est enduit d'une substance grasse qui le protège : le vernix caseosa. La multiplication des cellules nerveuses est achevée, le cerveau est totalement constitué. Ses ongles commencent à se former.

L'espace disponible se réduit, le fœtus qui mesure plus de 20 centimètres adopte la position fœtale.

M106: A Spiral Galaxy with a Strange Center

Explanation: What's happening at the center of spiral galaxy M106? A swirling disk of stars and gas, M106's appearance is dominated by blue spiral arms and red dust lanes near the nucleus, as shown in the featured image taken from the Kuwaiti desert. The core of M106 glows brightly in radio waves and X-rays where twin jets have been found running the length of the galaxy. An unusual central glow makes M106 one of the closest examples of the Seyfert class of galaxies, where vast amounts of glowing gas are thought to be falling into a central massive black hole. M106, also designated NGC 4258, is a relatively close 23.5 million light years away, spans 60 thousand light years across, and can be seen with a small telescope towards the constellation of the Hunting Dogs (Canes Venatici).

LES BELLES INVENTIONS DE LEONARD DE VINCI - A-t-il inventé la bicyclette ?

Léonard de Vinci a-t-il inventé la bicyclette ? Cette réalisation est tirée d'un dessin controversé découvert pendant les années 1960 en séparant deux feuillets du Codex Atlanticus qui avaient été collés. Le document est daté de 1493 de la main même de Léonard mais certains pensent que le dessin est un faux.

Toutefois, on trouve dans le Codex Madrid, un autre recueil de dessins de Léonard de Vinci qui nous est parvenu, la description d'une chaîne ressemblant en tout point à la chaîne de vélo figurant sur la bicyclette du Codex Atlanticus. Le mystère demeure.

SANTé/MEDECINE - La grossesse mois par mois - 4ème mois

Sa tête est moins disproportionnée car le corps se met à grossir plus vite. Les yeux, les oreilles sont maintenant bien en place, tout y est au niveau formes. Le fœtus cligne des yeux et a des mouvements de succion. Les organes mis en place se mettent à fonctionner. Les glandes du tube digestif sont en plein développement. La structure typique des reins est atteinte. Au niveau osseux la plupart des os sont distincts et les cavités des articulations sont présentes.

À la fin du quatrième mois, le fœtus a une longueur vertex-coccyx de plus ou moins 14 cm.

Explanation: A bright comet is moving into the evening skies. C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) has brightened and even though it is now easily visible to the unaided eye, it is so near to the Sun that it is still difficult to see. Pictured, Comet Tsuchinshan–ATLAS was captured just before sunrise from an Andes Mountain in Peru. Braving cold weather, this unusually high perch gave the astrophotographer such a low eastern horizon that the comet was obvious in the pre-dawn sky. Visible in the featured image is not only an impressively long dust tail extending over many degrees, but an impressively long and blue ion tail, too.  This month, as the comet moves out from the Sun and passes the Earth, evening observers should be able to see the huge dirty ice ball toward the west just after sunset.

Explanation: Comet McNaught, the Great Comet of 2007, grew a spectacularly long and filamentary tail. The magnificent tail spread across the sky and was visible for several days to Southern Hemisphere observers just after sunset. The amazing ion tail showed its greatest extent on long-duration, wide-angle camera exposures. During some times, just the tail itself was visible just above the horizon for many northern observers as well. Comet C/2006 P1 (McNaught), estimated to have attained a peak brightness of magnitude -5 (minus five), was caught by the comet's discoverer in the featured image just after sunset in January 2007 from Siding Spring Observatory in Australia. Comet McNaught, the brightest comet in decades, then faded as it moved further into southern skies and away from the Sun and Earth. Over the next month, Comet Tsuchinshan–ATLAS, a candidate for the Great Comet of 2024, should display its most spectacular tails visible from the Earth.

Au niveau de l'encéphale qui continue de grossir, la structure générale est présente. Deux renflements, un cervical et un lombaire, caractérisent la molle épinière. L'œil a maintenant sa rétine.

La peau du fœtus se compose de l'épiderme et du derme.

Le développement du fœtus plus en détail

Certains organes commencent à fonctionner. Ainsi le foie, très proéminent, produit de la bile. La moelle osseuse met en marche son usine pour produire des cellules sanguines.

L'ossification s'accélère tandis que les membres sont bien formés.

Le sexe du fœtus est visible grâce aux organes génitaux externes.

À la fin du troisième mois, le fœtus mesure environ 9 cm du vertex au coccyx.

ASTRONOMY - M27: Not a Comet

Explanation: While hunting for comets in the skies above 18th century France, astronomer Charles Messier diligently kept a list of the things encountered during his telescopic expeditions that were definitely not comets. This is number 27 on his now famous not-a-comet list. In fact, 21st century astronomers would identify it as a planetary nebula, but it's not a planet either, even though it may appear round and planet-like in a small telescope. Messier 27 (M27) is an excellent example of a gaseous emission nebula created as a sun-like star runs out of nuclear fuel in its core. The nebula forms as the star's outer layers are expelled into space, with a visible glow generated by atoms excited by the dying star's intense but invisible ultraviolet light. Known by the popular name of the Dumbbell Nebula, the beautifully symmetric interstellar gas cloud is over 2.5 light-years across and about 1,200 light-years away in the constellation Vulpecula. This impressive color image highlights details within the well-studied central region and fainter, seldom imaged features in the nebula's outer halo.

Explanation: When the sun sets on September 7, the Full Moon will rise. And on that date denizens around much of our fair planet, including parts of Antarctica, Australia, Asia, Europe, and Africa can witness a total lunar eclipse, with the Moon completely immersed in Earth's shadow. As the bright Full Moon first enters Earth's shadow it will darken, finally taking on a reddish hue during the total eclipse phase. In fact, the color of the Moon during a total lunar eclipse is due to reddened light from sunrises and sunsets around planet Earth. The reddened sunlight is scattered by a dense atmosphere into the planet's otherwise dark central shadow. When the sun set on August 22, this telephoto snapshot of red skies, blue sea, and the Mangiabarche Lighthouse was captured from Sant'Antioco, Sardinia, Italy.

Explanation: Ten thousand years ago, before the dawn of recorded human history, a new light would suddenly have appeared in the night sky and faded after a few weeks. Today we know this light was from a supernova, or exploding star, and record the expanding debris cloud as the Veil Nebula, a supernova remnant. This sharp telescopic view is centered on a western segment of the Veil Nebula cataloged as NGC 6960 but less formally known as the Witch's Broom Nebula. Blasted out in the cataclysmic explosion, an interstellar shock wave plows through space sweeping up and exciting interstellar material. Imaged with narrow band filters, the glowing filaments are like long ripples in a sheet seen almost edge on, remarkably well separated into atomic hydrogen (red) and oxygen (blue-green) gas. The complete supernova remnant lies about 1400 light-years away towards the constellation Cygnus. This Witch's Broom actually spans about 35 light-years. The bright star in the frame is 52 Cygni, visible with the unaided eye from a dark location but unrelated to the ancient supernova remnant.
