The Dark Tower in Scorpius

Explanation: In silhouette against a crowded star field along the tail of the arachnological constellation Scorpius, this dusty cosmic cloud evokes for some the image of an ominous dark tower. In fact, monstrous clumps of dust and molecular gas collapsing to form stars may well lurk within the dark nebula, a structure that spans almost 40 light-years across this gorgeous telescopic portrait. A cometary globule, the swept-back cloud is shaped by intense ultraviolet radiation from the OB association of very hot stars in NGC 6231, off the upper right corner of the scene. That energetic ultraviolet light also powers the globule's bordering reddish glow of hydrogen gas. Hot stars embedded in the dust can be seen as bluish reflection nebulae. This dark tower and associated nebulae are about 5,000 light-years away.

INVENTIONS DE DEMAIN - L'ovaire artificiel redonne espoir

Les femmes qui risquent de devenir infertiles après une chimiothérapie pourraient un jour avoir recours à un ovaire artificiel : leurs ovules, congelés avant le traitement, y seraient amenés à maturité des années plus tard, avant de procéder à une fécondation in vitro. Des chercheurs de l’Université Brown, au Rhode Island, ont  en effet élaboré le premier ovaire artificiel capable d’amener des ovules à maturité en dehors du corps d’une femme. Créé à partir de cellules prélevées sur des femmes en bonne santé, il pourrait rapidement se montrer utile pour la recherche sur la reproduction. Il permettrait, par exemple, de tester en laboratoire comment la maturation des ovules peut être altérée par diverses substances toxiques.

BEAUX POISSONS EXOTIQUES - Le poisson ange royal

Nommée Pygoplites diacanthus, cette espèce est qualifiée de « poisson ange duc » ou de « poisson ange royal ». Le genre auquel elle appartient, Pygoplites, est dit monotypique, c'est-à-dire que cette espèce est l'unique représentante de son genre. Elle nage dans les 50 premiers mètres de profondeur des océans Indien et Pacifique. Ce poisson se niche préférentiellement dans des zones aux multiples reliefs, afin de se cacher de potentiels prédateurs. D'autant qu'il arbore de magnifiques couleurs bleu vif et jaune orangé. Caractérisé par ses rayures verticales, il naît femelle et devient mâle en grandissant. On parle d'hermaphrodisme successif.

Explanation: Forget X-ray vision — imagine what you could see with gamma-ray vision! The featured all-sky map shows what the universe looks like to NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Fermi sees light with energies about a billion times what the human eye can see, and the map combines 12 years of Fermi observations. The colors represent the brightness of the gamma-ray sources, with brighter sources appearing lighter in color. The prominent stripe across the middle is the central plane of our Milky Way galaxy. Most of the red and yellow dots scattered above and below the Milky Way’s plane are very distant galaxies, while most of those within the plane are nearby pulsars. The blue background that fills the image is the diffuse glow of gamma-rays from distant sources that are too dim to be detected individually. Some gamma-ray sources remain unidentified and topics of research — currently no one knows what they are.

Alois Alzheimer est un neurologue allemand qui, en 1901, examina une femme de 51 ans souffrant de démence, Auguste Deter. En 1906, suite au décès de la patiente, il réalise son autopsie et montre une atrophie de son cerveau, ainsi que des dépôts anormaux dans et à l'extérieur des cellules nerveuses. Il décrit ses résultats le 4 novembre 1906, lors de la 37e Conférence des psychiatres allemands à Tübingen, en Allemagne.

Explanation: A supermoon occurred yesterday. And tonight's moon should also look impressive. Supermoons appear slightly larger and brighter than most full moons because they reach their full phase when slightly nearer to the Earth -- closer than 90 percent of all full moons. This supermoon was also a blue moon given the definition that it is the third of four full moons occurring during a single season. Blue moons are not usually blue, and a different definition holds that a blue moon is the second full moon that occurs during a single month. The featured image captured the blue supermoon right near its peak size yesterday as it was rising beyond the Temple of Poseidon in Greece. This supermoon is particularly unusual in that it is the first of four successive supermoons, the next three occurring in September, October, and November.

BEAUX POISSONS EXOTIQUES - Le véritable Némo

Particulièrement connu du grand public grâce au film « Le monde de Némo », Amphiprion ocellaris est une espèce de poisson-clown. À l'instar de tous les poissons du genre Amphiprion, qui ont la spécificité de vivre en symbiose avec des anémones. D'ordinaire, les anémones causent des brûlures. Mais ces poissons-clowns en sont visiblement protégés, par une couche de mucus recouvrant leurs écailles. L'origine de ce mucus n'est pas encore bien établi.

Amphiprion ocellaris nage principalement dans l'est de l'océan Indien. À la naissance, tous les individus sont de sexe masculin. Les jeunes mâles se regroupent en bancs, et l'un deux se transforme en femelle. Lorsque celle-ci s'isole avec un mâle pour se reproduire, une autre femelle peut apparaître dans le groupe.

Explanation: Inside the Cocoon Nebula is a newly developing cluster of stars. Cataloged as IC 5146, the beautiful nebula is nearly 15 light-years wide. Soaring high in northern summer night skies, it's located some 4,000 light years away toward the constellation of the Swan (Cygnus). Like other star forming regions, it stands out in red, glowing, hydrogen gas excited by young, hot stars, and dust-reflected starlight at the edge of an otherwise invisible molecular cloud. In fact, the bright star found near the center of this nebula is likely only a few hundred thousand years old, powering the nebular glow as it clears out a cavity in the molecular cloud's star forming dust and gas. A 48-hour long integration resulted in this exceptionally deep color view tracing tantalizing features within and surrounding the dusty stellar nursery.

PLANTES FASCINANTES - Le vengeur masqué : l'Aristolochia salvadorensis

Cette drôle de plante, l'Aristolochia salvadorensis, originaire du Salvador, peut être observée dans les forêts tropicales et subtropicales. La forme de ses fleurs lui vaut le surnom de Dark Vador... Un sobriquet qu'elle porte très bien, d'autant que plusieurs sous-espèces de ce genre sont notoirement connues pour être néphrotoxiques et cancérigènes !

A Solar Prominence Eruption from SDO

Explanation: One of the most spectacular solar sights is an erupting prominence. In 2011, NASA's Sun-orbiting Solar Dynamic Observatory spacecraft imaged an impressively large prominence erupting from the surface. The dramatic explosion was captured in ultraviolet light in the featured time lapse video covering 90 minutes, where a new frame was taken every 24 seconds. The scale of the prominence is huge -- the entire Earth would easily fit under the flowing curtain of hot gas. A solar prominence is channeled and sometimes held above the Sun's surface by the Sun's magnetic field. A quiescent prominence typically lasts about a month and may erupt in a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) expelling hot gas into the Solar System. The energy mechanism that creates a solar prominence is a continuing topic of research. Our Sun is again near solar maximum and so very active, featuring numerous erupting prominences and CMEs, one of which resulted in picturesque auroras just over the past week.
