Seeing Titan

Explanation: Shrouded in a thick atmosphere, the surface of Saturn's largest moon, Titan, is really hard to see. Small particles suspended in Titan's upper atmosphere cause an almost impenetrable haze, strongly scattering light at visible wavelengths and hiding surface features from prying eyes. Still, Titan's surface is better imaged at infrared wavelengths, where scattering is weaker and atmospheric absorption is reduced. Arrayed around this visible light image (center) of Titan are some of the clearest global infrared views of the tantalizing moon so far. In false color, the six panels present a consistent processing of 13 years of infrared image data from the Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) on board the Cassini spacecraft orbiting Saturn from 2004 to 2017. They offer a stunning comparison with Cassini's visible light view. NASA's revolutionary rotorcraft mission to Titan's surface is due to launch no earlier than July, 2028.

Explanation: Near the heart of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster, a string of galaxies known as Markarian's Chain stretches across this telescopic field of view. Anchored in the frame at bottom right by prominent lenticular galaxies, M84 (bottom) and M86, you can follow the chain's gentle arc up and toward the left. Near center you'll spot the pair of interacting galaxies NGC 4438 and NGC 4435, known to some as Markarian's Eyes. An estimated 50 million light-years distant, the Virgo Cluster itself is the nearest galaxy cluster. With up to about 2,000 member galaxies, it has a noticeable gravitational influence on our own Local Group of Galaxies. Within the Virgo Cluster at least seven galaxies in Markarian's Chain appear to move coherently, while others may appear to be part of the chain by chance.

Dans la lutte contre le cancer, la résistance aux médicaments pose problème depuis toujours car les tumeurs ne sont pas des blocs homogènes. Elles sont composées de cellules différentes, dont certaines possèdent déjà, ou acquièrent rapidement, des mécanismes de défense, ce qui fait qu'elles parviennent à neutraliser le traitement ou à modifier leur fonctionnement interne pour continuer à se multiplier.

C’est précisément cette faculté d’adaptation qu'une équipe de scientifiques de l’Université d’État de Pennsylvanie a choisi d’exploiter. Publiée dans la revue Nature Biotechnology, l'étude montre comment il est possible d'orienter l’évolution des cellules tumorales pour mieux les éliminer ensuite.

Un système à double switch génétique

Concrètement, les chercheurs ont imaginé une méthode de « double commutation de sélection génétique » qui consiste à introduire dans les cellules cancéreuses deux dispositifs génétiques capables, à terme, de conduire à leur destruction.

Dans un premier temps, certaines cellules sont rendues résistantes à un médicament déjà utilisé contre le cancer du poumon, l’Erlotinib, un puissant inhibiteur de la phosphorylation intracellulaire de l'EGPR, le gène à l'origine du récepteur qui donne l'ordre à la cellule de se multiplier.

Sous la pression du traitement, ces cellules modifiées prennent alors l’avantage sur les autres et deviennent majoritaires dans la tumeur. Autrement dit, les chercheurs orientent volontairement la sélection des cellules qui survivent.

Cancer : une nouvelle approche génétique cible les cellules malades sans toucher aux autres

Dans un second temps, un autre gène est activé, cette fois à l’aide d’une molécule considérée comme inoffensive, le 5-FC. Ce gène produit une enzyme qui transforme cette substance en une toxine, la molécule 5-FU, qui constitue la chimiothérapie la plus prescrite car elle est chimiquement proche de celles qui constituent notre ADN et peut donc en perturber la duplication.

De la sorte, cette toxine va tuer non seulement les cellules modifiées, mais aussi celles qui se trouvent autour d’elles. Le piège se referme donc sur la tumeur au moment même où elle pensait avoir trouvé une issue.

La technique du piège

Cette stratégie est innovante. Au lieu de subir l’évolution du cancer, l'objectif est désormais de la diriger, la résistance des cellules tumorales devenant une étape préparatoire avant l’attaque finale qui provoquera leur élimination.

Pour autant, il ne s’agit encore que d’un traitement expérimental qui n'a pas été testé sur des patients. Il n'y a pas eu d'essai clinique. Par ailleurs, il faudra trouver le moyen d’introduire ces gènes thérapeutiques dans les tumeurs. Nonobstant, si cette méthode était validée, elle pourrait permettre de concevoir des thérapies plus intelligentes, capables non seulement de détruire la tumeur, mais également de prévenir les rechutes et les récidives.

Explanation: The image was timed to capture a total lunar eclipse -- but it came with quite a twist. First, the eclipse: the fully Earth-shadowed Moon is visible as the orange orb near the top. The eclipsed Moon's orange color is caused by a slight amount of red light scattered first by Earth's atmosphere, adding a color like a setting Sun. Now, the twist: one of the apparent double helix bands is the Milky Way, the central disk of our home galaxy. The second band is zodiacal light, sunlight scattered by dust in our Solar System. The reason they cross is because the plane where dust orbits our Sun is tilted relative to the plane where stars orbit our Galaxy. This well-known tilt is shown dramatically in the featured wide-angle Mercator-projected picture, spanning from horizon to horizon, captured in early September from Mingantu Observing Station in Inner Mongolia, China.

Cette maladie affecte aussi le sommeil, ce qui aggrave davantage les symptômes de fatigue. Même après une longue nuit de sommeil, on se réveille fatigué. Ceux qui en souffrent décrivent un sommeil trop léger et non réparateur.

Explanation: No, Earth did not recently acquire six more moons! Today’s APOD is a combination of images following the Moon, Venus, and the Pleiades across a southern Sicilian sky as twilight turned to evening on April 19. From 2023 to 2029, the Pleiades' and the Moon “visit" each other once per month due to the Pleiades' location in the ecliptic plane. April 2026 saw the celestial alignment of their visit with Venus. About six stars in the Pleiades cluster (Messier 45) are typically visible with the unaided eye. Due to the cluster’s visibility across the world, there are many myths and legends across cultures associated with the Pleiades. The Haudenosaunee people of North America, for example, say that seven boys danced so enthusiastically that they lifted off into the sky. Astronomers recently found thousands more Pleiades members, showing that after thousands of years of gazing upon this cluster, there is yet more to learn about the Pleiades.

Explanation: They're like mountain peaks, but they are forming stars. Bright-rimmed, flowing shapes gather near the center of this rich starfield toward the borders of the nautical southern constellations Puppis and Vela. Composed of interstellar gas and dust, the grouping of light-year sized cometary globules is about 1300 light-years distant. Energetic ultraviolet light from nearby hot stars has molded the globules and ionized their bright rims. The globules also stream away from the Vela supernova remnant which may have influenced their swept-back shapes. Within them, cores of cold gas and dust are likely collapsing to form low mass stars whose formation will ultimately cause the globules to disperse. In fact, cometary globule CG 30 (upper right in the group) sports a small reddish glow inside its head, a telltale sign of energetic jets from a star in the early stages of formation.

Très fréquemment, la fibromyalgie cause une fatigue persistante, et ce, dès le réveil. L’intensité varie d’une personne à l’autre. Elle oscille entre fatigue légère et sensation d’épuisement, comme celle que l’on ressent avec la grippe. La fatigue peut être ressentie au moindre effort et vider la personne de son énergie. Lorsque c’est le cas, c’est l’épuisement total : À ce moment là, la personne se sent incapable de faire quoi que ce soit.
